Encontrei algo interessante pelo StumbleUpon.com. Trata-se de um artigo, intitulado “Was Darwin Wrong?“, escrito por David Quammen, para a National Geographic Magazine Online, em novembro de 2004.
O texto fala sobre o evolucionismo, numa linguagem clara e simples. O autor discorre acerca da relatividade das teorias científicas (“Each of these theories is an explanation that has been confirmed to such a degree, by observation and experiment, that knowledgeable experts accept it as fact.“), e contrapõe a evolução com o criacionismo. Ao fim, conclui que Darwin “was right about evolution, that is. He wasn’t right about everything.“, e fala de vários exemplos recentes da aplicação da teoria Darwiniana, como o caso das bactérias, que “are part of the continuum of life, all shaped and diversified by evolutionary forces“, e por isso acabam, com o tempo, “aprendendo” a resistir aos medicamentos. O autor abusa de ironias (“biomedical research using mice and other animals, including chimpanzees, which (to their sad misfortune) are our closest living relatives“) e de uma linguagem não-científica (“Tell him that there’s an ancestral connection between land animals and whales, and his reaction is: Fine, maybe. But show me the intermediate stages.“), o que torna a leitura do texto bastante agradável.
